MILLIONS OF SPORES IN 4K HD, Massive Shiitake Spore Release
The waves of spores coming off these mature Shiitake mushrooms as they bask in the afternoon sun look like whispy smoke trails. I had never seen spores dropping so heavy from Shiitake, so I took the unique opportunity to capture some 4K video.
It's easy and rewarding to grow your own fresh Shiitakes at home, and fresh picked Shiitakes are far tastier than the days old shriveled mushrooms you'll find at most grocery stores. Check out the following videos to learn how to grow them:

MONOTUB SHIITAKE MEGABLOCK, 5 lb. Flush!
Переглядів 1,2 тис.День тому
I used a medium monotub from Microppose to make a ridiculously large Shiitake block and it turned out better than I expected. The first flush was pretty piddly, so I went with the a two week rest and soak method that has worked for me in the past to cycle nice follow up flushes. After the soak, the block exploded yielding nearly five pounds of quality fruits on the second flush. I actually thin...

    This is off topic but I recently purchased a spore syringe to create a liquid culture. After inoculation, I sucked some liquid back into the syringe. 5 days later and the syringe is full of beautiful mycelium. This will prevent me from having to stab the liquid culture in the future, and allow me to monitor the progress of the original culture jar without taking it out of incubation. I'm sure everyone else does this as it's fairly obvious, but for anyone that never thought about it I just thought to add that tip.

    No simmer teks for large grains never hydrate grains properly. I guarantee that the starchy inside of his grains are still rock solid after that soak. Imporoper hydration = improper sterilization...especially when coupled with non vented pc. However, if the mycelium is aggressive enough like oyster then it might not contam before first flush, but this way is not ideal. Shroomery explains this in detail! Do what works for you but i had many failures with oats until I dialed in spawn prep, which included simmering any whole grain for atleast 30 mins at my altitude.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms День тому

      I appreciate you have a different technique you like, but I disagree with many of your statements. You can easily functionally hydrate grains by starting with hot water and just letting them soak for an extended period. I've been doing it for 20 years with great success. I don't have issues with grain contams. I often grow very slow anemic strains out on grain like Blewits and don't have any contam issues with this method. I've also tested my PC hundreds of times both allowing it to vent and not, no difference in contam rates. I learned my techniques through trial, error, and Shroomery, back in the day when there was no UA-cam. I don't go to the trouble of making tek videos on things I don't know work. I've taught many people this grain prep method and it works just as well for them. I'm always learning and I try to keep an open mind, but if it works it works. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      In small quantities I don't worry about it too much. If you grow in volume it can definitely be a concern. Best thing to do is have good ventilation and pick your mushrooms early before they dump a ton of spores. These were a day or so past when I should have picked them.

    Sure appreciate your efforts to teach people how to raise many kinds of mushrooms and many different ways! One thing about getting into the business is that you have to deal with vendors to get the materials you need to succeed and the mushroom farming industry there seems to be very arrogant people in the business, and really don't care about your success! And they are the ones to avoid no matter how good they appear to be! If they don't have time to talk to you, it's not that they don't have the time, but arrogance! You can expect that the arrogant people will not have a good customer service and you will get ripped off! You can make lots of money in this business, but you can lose your ass really quick too! Your vendors can make, or break you! Field and forest, and north spore are really good people to work with! They actually treat their customers with respect and care about their success!

I've always openly shared information, even when I used to be in the business, and even when people told me I shouldn't because it would hurt my profits. My personal experience is that it has mostly had a positive effect on my life and my enjoyment of all things fungi. That being said, I'll take my Morel spots to my grave 😂 Thanks for watching, commenting, and sharing your experience. Appreciate you 👊

    I have a ton of fine clean pure oak sawdust fairly fine mesh. Was wanting to add old coffee grounds and buckwheat hulls all will put in a 200 gallon trough and mix in calcium hydroxide. Is the substrate needed to be rinsed after sterilizing? I'll be using 8' clear poly 3 mil tubes made with an impulse sealer to seal ends of poly. will punch holes every 12" to 16" in a spiral pattern . These will be hung on rotating hangers and lighted with LED using all the air purification, filtration, humidifier, Mini split HVAC to maintain temp through the year. Will be using UVC light to sterilize the room between growing sessions. Entire room is being built with extruded PVC panels and walls are insulated. Do you think this system will be sufficient? Growing Oyster, Trumpet, Lions mane , possibly shitake

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms 6 днів тому

      Sounds like a decent plan. I would skip the coffee grounds personally and just go sawdust and buckwheat hulls. Coffee grounds I think could lead to increased contamination with that method. No rinsing after sterilization. You hydrate properly then sterilize. You don't want to introduce any water after sterilization.

      Light seems to be the key, I never knew that until I this experiment. The other interesting thing is that even the surface that wasn't really popcorned produced nice fruits on the second flush.

    How do I grow small shitakes tho? I had one block where the 2nd flush was tons of TINY shitake. OH they were PERFECT in my bison and bean chili!

    • @johnstamos4629
      @johnstamos4629 13 днів тому

      just food for thought- I got my genetics from Mycelium Emporium , Moonlight Shitake. I dont smack my shitakes, and I hose them down 3 times a day to keep them a reddish brown. I also no longer let them rest between flushes. I use scissors for a clean harvest and keep hosing them down daily for the 2nd and 3rd flush. I love ya, small pet peeve of mine- its pronounced shi-ta-"KAY" not, shi-ta-"KEY".

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms 13 днів тому

      Damn that sounds good. I think the individual fruit size is somewhat strain dependent. Try S75 if you haven't yet. That seemed to produce less but bigger fruits for me.

    I noticed you equalized the pressure inside the jar then injected 10 CCs of LC going from negative pressure to a slight positive pressure inside the jar, meaning you put 10 CCs more air in the jar than you actually needed. If you need to introduce an estimated 30-40 CCs of air, why not start with injecting your 10 CCs of LC first, thus reducing the amount of air needed to equalize pressure by 10 CCs, and reducing your chances of contamination by doing so. It just makes more sense to put the LC in first then relieve the remaining vacuum.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms 13 днів тому

      Never measured it and it varies by jar but I would guess it's more like 100 - 200 ccs to initially equalize a pint LC jar. I usually only add 3 or 4 ccs from the syringe. If you injected a jar in a state of full vacuum it would rip a 10 cc syringe plunger down instantly. In theory I get what you're saying, but in practice once you do the initial equalization everything else works itself out in the wash.

    Hey there...i was thinking about setting up a bed for mushrooms. I just got access to all the fresh wood chips I want from a neighbor's yard project. They ground up branches of oaks, beech, and poplar. How long should I wait to inoculate? Would boiling water disable the built-in anti fungal properties? Or should I just wait until winter and start with dormant wood? There's a lot of conflicting info out there. Any high-level thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms 13 днів тому

      With chips I would inoculate them asap, no need to wait. Winecaps would be a good choice. You may even get some mushrooms this Fall with Winecaps.

    I find watching a variety of mycology enthusiasts quite fascinating. I love the free tutorial aspect and I greatly appreciate your efforts in producing helpful educational content... I'm also always pleasantly surprised to see the fluidity in mother nature and the subtle ways she tips her hat to her abundance against humanity's attempts at "rules". While you go for a 4% sugar solution using light caro, another enthusiast will teach sticking to a 2% solution using other forms such as glucose, dextrose,etc. While you teach using soy peptone, many enthusiasts never use it. We attempt turning everything into an absolute, a "science", while nature reminds us there's a million nutrients mushrooms can use & it's not as difficult as we try and portray it. There's room to breathe ❤️
